Thank you so much for sharing your story! I completely agree that students of color need to become more involved in extra curricular activities. Its one of the only ways we are able to gain the social and cultural capital that our parents are unable to give us. Being a first generation college student is daunting in itself, and having no one at home to help you navigate the college process and adding the stress of not having the social knowledge that helps you adapt, I believe is what leads students to disengage and drop out. Getting students involved in extracurricular activities at a younger age, exposing them to different social situations, and having more role models from their own backgrounds on college campuses are all ways I think we can help low income and minority students succeed in higher education.
