I love this! Stories are so powerful and this visual interactive adventure would allow potential students the opportunity to engage with their search process, rather than simply consume it via websites, brochures, and campus visits. I wonder how many high school students see an element of choice in their process? Your idea allows them to makes choices throughout, which seems empowering.
Norka, I love this idea. While I agree with some of the concerns (childcare, internet access, and unbalanced expectations), I think we need to really consider best practices around working from home. Once we reach that place I think we may find the option reduces stress and increases productivity in some ways. I taught a hybrid class with 2/3 of the course face-to-face and 1/3 online. It was really a challenge to plan, but I found that the face time was much more productive because much of the media and group work could be accomplished via technology on the online days. I've done virtual field trips and hangouts. It is doable and could mesh well with a discussion around passion.
Hi Elsa! Thank you for your comment and question. I haven't thought through implementation but a theme that keeps coming up in brainstorming sessions and #tguild chats is passion. A "quick" solution could be to reorganize curriculum in departments based on teachers' passion areas/areas of expertise. For example, I'm in an English department and currently teach British literature to seniors (which is admittedly not my passion area of lit!) and a survey course to freshman. Why not make all courses "survey" courses drawn up as a department each year themed on passions and interested of the teacher? Another model could be reduce the number of general courses taught in a teacher's discipline to make room to teach electives of their choosing without overloading courses. I suppose I am envisioning more of a college model for high school where students take one or two core courses before being able to choose classes based on what interests them, as well. In my mind, I envision this would boost the morale of teachers and the overall experience of school for students because they would be taught by people who were living their vocation of teaching, as well as their passion. Schools could market themselves based on unique elective offerings, which in turn may lead to teacher retention because they would feel valued. This is me thinking "out loud," so feedback is welcome!
