Reach Out And Read Invites Parents to Read With Kids In Hospital Waiting Rooms

What inspiration can we learn from ROAR who incorporates books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together?

I love to think about how different organizations like ROAR interact with parents and support them in learning how to support their child.

I wonder if one of the reasons why PTC seem meaningless to many is that the purpose of the conferences isn't well defined. Is to tell the parents the child's grades (is she doing well/struggling)? Is it to build a relationship with the parent? Is it to support the parents in learning how to support the child? (similar to ROAR)? I am sure for most schools, it's a combination of all three (or more) which is why it is so difficult to actually meet the needs of everyone involved. Add in the seeming lack of structure to support any of those goals and it becomes a mess that no one is happy with.

Would it make sense to only focus on one goal at a conference? Would it make sense to create different events and processes that support each of the goals? Organizations like ROAR that really focus on one thing are able to tailor their message to meet that goal and so one can actually measure their success against the goal and everyone is on the same page so there is no ambiguity about the purpose. Reading all the different posts seems to show that there is a lot of ambiguity and misunderstandings around PTC and their purpose.
