Give students about 1 day a week where they can pursue a long-term, in-depth research question that they are genuinely curious about. Research would include reading books, magazines, blogs, watching TED talks, listening to podcasts, etc. They can share their findings online in a class blog that is open to the wider community for comment, suggestions & feedback. Better yet, students can be tasked with identifying a real world local problem that they could help address through long-term study.

Arpan,
I agree that it is important to have students grapple with real problems that they are generally interested in.
