Value Proposition: A program for high school students that promotes building positive relationships to inspire them to continue their education and REACH HIGHER!

Overview: A program that is all inclusive focusing on developing personal relationships in an increasingly disconnected world. Students learn to use their personal story to help empower them, overcome adversity and build strong relationships.

Program Components:

*Launch video

*Daily personal check in between student, teacher, and peer mentors

*Program overview, outcome expectations, examples of programs that have implemented, metrics

*Motivational videos (links to various videos to choose)

*Inspirational speakers (links to speakers and topics)

*Team building activities (links to activities for different age groups and purpose/ outcomes)

*Upperclassmen led (may be offered for credit recovery)

*Developing leadership skills (leadership through decision making, program/schedule development, and team building activities)

*Self esteem building (links to activities and group discussions)

*Counseling (group therapy time built in )

*Individual awards and recognition not public

*Daily personal check in between student, teacher, and peer mentors

*Empathy training (links to videos and activities; examples of race, gender, sexual orientation topics)

Reach: support from partnerships with Reach Higher Campaign and Teacher’s Guild mentorships. Avid classrooms, Advisory classes


Metrics: comparison data in daily attendance rate, discipline/ suspension rate, and graduation rate. Before and after program implementation.


Scalability: Can be adapted to each school’s need for improvement.



Sustainability: Ongoing as upperclassmen train underclassmen and develop the program. Alumni involvement

  1. Discover what motivates students to get an education beyond high school. (research based)
  2. Demonstrate to high school students that each of us has a compelling story that we use to motivate us, and they too can use the power of their own story to drive them to continue their education and achieve their goals.
  3. Promote the value of a Building Positive Relationships program and the impact it has on inspiring students to REACH HIGHER!


For whom this video is intended:

  1. High school students
  2. Everyone that works with teens to prepare them for educational opportunities after high school: counselors, teachers, mentors, outreach program coordinators and parents


Reach/Scalability: Utilize the Reach Higher partnerships, Department of Education, State and County Offices of Education, social media, education websites

  3. Inspire students to build positive relationships and utilize the http://collegeaccess.org website to help them REACH HIGHER!

Students can see and hear a combination of stories from regular folks and recognizable figures each telling their stories about finding their path to college. Through these video taped stories we can teach empathy, perseverance and appreciation for the challenges ahead. We can learn about the struggles that different populations of people have overcome and make connections with students facing some of those same challenges today. 

The video could tell a story to students that their path to college isn't a fairy tale but an adventure.  It should inspire students to persevere. It could expose students to the idea that the path to college is challenging to many people that would at first would seem to have advantages, yet have also had to overcome challenges to REACH HIGHER.  

I envision this through the lens of a HS student unsure of where the road ahead lies. Maybe they  don't have the courage to think beyond the street they live on. The video would be inspirational and motivational in its message that they can WANT more for themselves. Stories would include people that found their courage to take a chance leaving their friends and familiar neighborhoods and #reachhigher!

I envision the video being 8-12 minutes in quick storytelling style from a variety of people, yet all sharing the message about choosing courage, and finding resources and mentors to help on that journey.  

The video would be available to HSchool counselors, and mentor programs. It would also be available on social media.


What if this idea EVOLVED a bit. What if we develop a website for students to share their story and then were able to raise funds for their first year of school tuition, books and fees?


Students could share their stories through video, or writing or have someone write for them, their narrative. Then using a model similar to Donors Choose or GoFundme. The student’s first year of school tuition, books and fee needs could be funded directly to the school they have applied to. The student doesn’t ever actually get the money in their hands (avoiding fraud) but the school has direct access to the account that is set -up to fund the student. Additionally, If the student doesn’t make a claim for the money in their school account with in 12 months, the funds would be returned to the donors.
