"Nuts and Gum" Mash-up

How might we use fun as a "nudge" for desired outcomes? Piano stairs shows us that, by making things fun, we can prime for new behaviors.

As demonstrated in the video, "We believe that the easiest way to change people's behaviour for the better is by making it fun to do." In other words, fun can be one of the most powerful nudges to change the way we behave. To spark student curiosity and move away from simply collecting "dots" through rote content knowledge, we can challenge our students to make connections between connect dots by mashing up music with architecture/engineering, for example.

In this way, let's consider how we can apply the "Mash Up" method to combine areas of study in our schools in new and exciting ways. But we can take our mash-ups one step further by thinking about how our creations affect people on our campus in fun ways. How might we combine math and PE to get people interested in fitness? How might we combine science and ELA to increase the number of books kids read? If we use fun

How does this idea help to spark student curiosity?

By mashing together different ideas, we can start to see connections between dots that we might never have noticed before. And by asking ourselves how we can have fun with a given combination of ideas, we can not only challenge ourselves to make connections but inspire others to continue their investigation in greater detail by having fun with them.
