3D Printing Trig Braclets

Students create 3D printed jewelry using trigonometric functions.

After learning about trigonometric functions students will use their knowledge and using a graphic calculator to make a 3D printed bracelet.  At Schuyler Central High School's Algebra 2 students use Desmos to graph trigonometric functions that they learned about the previous chapter and apply their knowledge to create a bracelet for themselves or a family member. 

Students use Desmos to graph a trig equation, students will then use AutoDesk Sculpt+ on the iPad to create a capsule and transform and add to the capsule to emulate their graph of the trig bracelet. 

Students will then use a 3D printer to print out their bracelet and use Desmos once again to take a picture and see how close they got to their trigonometric function.

At the end, students use trigonometric functions to create something that they made using math that wouldn't have the opportunity to elsewhere.

How does this idea help to spark student curiosity?

Most students in high school feel like they will never use the math they learn in real-world settings, it is important for teachers to have students create and spark students curiosity by providing them outlets of showing what they know and applying that knowledge.
