At its core, teaching is all about relationships. The development of trusting relationships requires excellent communication and collaboration skills, and the capacity to have empathy for another person’s perspective. For example, Kelly Matteri described in Discover how one of the most important “PD” experiences she ever had was taking on the challenge of learning Roller Derby because she became immersed in what it feels like to be a newbie again. This experience allowed her to develop more empathy for first-time learners and the importance of keeping a growth mindset about her own practice.
How can we create PD experiences that are focused on the soft skills that lead to achievement in the classroom and within the broader school community?
