Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson is the reason why I'm a maker.
I was the youngest of three girls and given a lot of freedom to explore my world. The large boulder in the woods adjacent to Tootin Hills School would become a bus one day and an elephant the next. Even though I was discouraged from becoming an architect at the age of 8 by my well meaning father, I never stopped making. I made forts, magic shows, Halloween costumes, clothing, food, art, poetry, music, web design, blogs, and yes, even architecture. We are all driven to make something. From making new discoveries to making friends, this project's mission is for you to answer the essential question, "Why do I make?" Share your story and inspire hidden makers everywhere.
