Even very young students can understand and track progress toward their learning goals. Something as simple as an "up arrow" at the end of a session, if the student has demonstrated a new skill/competence, can be a powerful tool for ownership in their learning. Even better if students are involved in goal setting from the get-go, so they understand where they're going, and why.
