AP Pedagogy Dice

This pedagogy dice gives students the opportunity to decide how they want to craft their AP-Level response to a text.

Teachers can design into this dice different pedagogical goals that they can then have students "roll" in reference to whatever the complicated text they read in class entails.

This project I began at an AP Summer Institute in preparation for the AP Literature course. I took all of my notes on Adobe Illustrator so that I might be able to make either a poster or a product from the design. I have made a series of prototypes, but as they are made of paper, none of them have been sturdy enough to actually "roll" in the classroom. That said, the multiple triangles that make up the dice are frequently employed in class in response to prose/poetry/drama.

The dice allows the AP class to oscillate between student-selected activities and the aleatoric "roll." In doing so, students can exercise a choice as to how they might respond to text. Moreover, the dice centralizes pedagogical techniques so that students do not feel affronted or surprised by the strategies teachers use. Briefly, they can own their own learning style.

The pedagogy dice authors learning in much the same why that IDEO's design-thinking games inspire a new method of brainstorming or iteration; however, the strategies that I've laid out align to the AP curriculum itself. That is, the techniques printed on the dice direct learning in a subject specific way, which has an inherent incentive: do these techniques and you will find success on the exam. Ultimately this is a tool, a means to improve student scores on various practice tests. This improvement (not the dice itself) will demonstrate mastery, and hopefully, students attribute their success to their ongoing investment in such techniques/games.
