Student-Generated Science Labs

Students write grant proposals to the teacher asking for funding for materials on how they will show mastery in a lab-based environment.

In my case, we were covering the conservation of energy in a high school engineering class. Students were asked to generate a procedure to prove the conservation of energy and write a brief grant proposal to test this law of physics; if approved, their materials were ordered. They carried out their experiments and then wrote an extensive report on their findings. This can easily be contextualized for many other topics in science and gives students a far deeper understanding of the concepts at play instead of a "cooked" laboratory exercise.
