Students color-code their writing around 10-12 different grammatical phrases/clauses.

After teaching into each individual grammatical structure, I built a larger color-coding language to help students build their writing. This system made creative writing accountable to larger standards and assessable at glance. I spoke about the design of this system at NCTE:

Hi Everett

I enjoyed the presentation and I love that you have taken this idea and then expanded it into producing the Zines. Are you able to see measurable progress in student achievement? It feels like there should be huge gains. I also like that this is putting ideas into practice and that students will be able see where their writing matters in terms of presenting information. Have you encouraged your students to transfer this into other formats than the Zines such as blog posts? or anything else?
