Facilitate an activity in which students go through a large amount of items and decide whether to keep, toss, or donate each item. The aim is to hopefully teach students to think about different items and figure out the best place the item would belong. This can also be a community building activity in which items can be donated to a local charity or business.

There's something in here about the life cycle of objects, too... It would be interesting to take kids on a field trip to somewhere like a local recycling plant, or even the city dump! To truly understand what happens to an object before it reaches you and after you discard it is an incredibly important teaching.
