When a student asks why something is, don't give them the answer. Have them research it, ask their peers, and think it through. This will help students be more independent in learning, in thought processing, and provide less spoon feeding. Encourage the search for answers with more questions. This may help with intrinsic motivation and educational confidence as they learn new things.
