My project is being created and designed with on grade level mastery minority student in mind. Having witnessed the disparities of minority representation in high school level math courses in middle school; I wanted to create and design a pathway for a larger number of  minority students to gain entrance into Algebra I by their eighth grade year.  My project would begin in early August with a 2-week preparatory camp.In order to prepare students who are identified as viable candidates for Algebra I.  Foundational skills will be reviewed and some Algebra I skills will be pre-taught. These students will have an Algebra I support class as part of their course schedule for the school year.

Hi Kimberly, such an important idea--I wonder, since sometimes the classroom groupings/scheduling may be out of a teachers control at this point in the year, could the empathy piece for this challenge be focused on what its like to be possibly only one of a few students of color represented in that class? How might the teacher create a welcoming environment for those students? How can other students learn what it feels like to not be represented or feel like you don't have a place in a higher level math class due to your race or ethnicity? Such deep, but important work.

also, thinking about the Hidden Figures photo--maybe there is an opportunity in the math class to learn more and build empathy for these women and other "Hidden Figures" in math and science? And how might we think about the few minority students in middle school advanced math class as present day hidden figures?

Hi Megan, thanks for the feedback. I truly believe the most difficult implementation piece will be scheduling but it is definitely not impossible. My plan is to begin this for SY 2017-2018 due to the scheduling aspect. I teach at a school which is predominantly AA but many of the students in our high school credit courses are part of one of my school's magnet program. My concern and goal to target those "minority" non-magnet program students who get overlooked but with support could succeed. Which plays to the "hidden figure" theme.

Hi Kimberly-- scheduling can be such a challenge, especially depending on the school. I love that you are taking this challenge on! Another teacher is also thinking about scheduling and how to incorporate student voice, check out Schedule building , not sure if there might be any insights for you. Would love to hear how you end up tackling this!
