I am a theacher in the University of Guanajuato, in the architectural school division.  I theach them architectural design 1.

I have some activities in where the students have to research some houses around the world, they have to share this information. After we have a review of all the students´s research, we vote for the one that is going to be install in a yard enough big to be place.

In teams, they have to draw the floor plan whith tape in the floor,  at the end they have to pretend they are living in it.

This sounds like an interesting exercise! How might you really amp up the empathy in this learning experience? Could the students prototype sooner in the research project to gain empathy for what it would be like to live in such a house? Could the students' goal be to find a way to improve the design, testing different ideas of how to do this? Could the students find a way to speak to someone who lives in such a house, and interview them about what it's like to live there?
