For an ES environment - Using the book Same, Same but Different by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw as a read aloud, we begin to have students think about how their lives are similar and different to others.

From there we set up a photographic gallery walk of images of children in similar and different home, school, community environments.  Students walk through the gallery silently, with sticky notes, noting how they are similar and different from the images in the gallery.

This is a front loading experience for a unit with an empathy focus.
