Mindfulness Rooms to Improve School Environments

I would like to create a mindfulness room for students with behavioral issues to teach kids strategies to help to manage their emotions.

Awesome idea! Have you been to any "mindfulness" trainings? Getting trained on how to be mindful is a great way to go. There's a ton of research out there on bringing this to schools. I'd stay away from the word "meditation" as it is tied to religion in some people's minds. Using the phrase, "Mindfulness Room" is a more widely accepted term. Just a thought. Good luck! Beth

Good point, Beth. A simple word can make a big difference in perception. The mindfulness training is a first stop for me and a potential team. Do you have any you would suggest?

Hi LeCinda Jennings Thank you for this great idea! Meditation and mindfulness are so important to students and teachers. It just takes a little time each day to get everyone in the right frame of mind to learn. I'm so interested to see you build out this idea! What would you need to get this idea off the ground? What activities and resources would the students have available? The next step is to build this idea out more by adding to your contribution page and also creating a collaborative Google doc. Add the link to your doc on your contribution page so that others can help you build.

Thanks Donna!
Firstly, I would need some data to show success and the impact of this idea in other spaces. Next, I would need to plan how and when students would be sent/allowed to go and a plan for their visit. Finally, the logistics including space, furniture (mats, etc.), and who would staff the meditation room.

This is a great idea. I think we should have a quiet space just to mediate. We all need time to reflect and think without disruption. This can be done just using a few minutes in a day.

Thank you Sharon. We all need that space between our emotions and responses to make the best choices.

This is a great idea. Meditation is so powerful. To teach children how to quiet their mind and focus on that quiet place. This practice teaches them to give their brain a break from all the input and noise to refresh, regenerate and refocus. What are your ideas to begin a prototype? I would love to help you build out this idea.
