Student Feedback Using Screencasting: Let me show you! No rubric required!

Students receive feedback on digital projects through screencasting to hear and see teacher comments and suggestions.

Students are currently creating Glogs about zero gravity sports that astronauts on the ISS can do to keep strong muscles and bones throughout their space journey. They just used Skype to discuss ISS life and the effects space has on the human body for ideas and inspiration.  Their Glog evaluations will be screencasts of my feedback of the sport designs.  I will go through and show areas of strengths and areas for reflection for continued improvement.  I believe all student projects should never be considered finished without reflection and revision after teacher and peer feedback. Peer feedback can also be a screencast, rather than just comments in writing or orally. 

After a student submits a project, students often receive a rubric with little or no information on how to improve upon their work.  Teachers can screencast their assessment, by viewing and commenting about student digital work.  Here is an example from an assessment of a college unit, where I discuss what I liked about the project and suggestions for improvement and followup.  This allows teachers to provide more thorough feedback, and students are clear both visually and through audio and how to improve their project. The students are also motivated to work and are more responsible about completing tasks, since the assessment is so thorough.  Just remember to keep it positive first.

Peer feedback can also be a screencast, rather than just comments in writing or orally.

Share research or student experiences that informed your idea!

When I received this type of feedback, I was excited to see the video and hear what was said about my own project. I analyzed every word and incorporated all suggestions. This video I made at BSU, helped the group of graduate students improve their curriculum design for use in schools. Students thrive on attention, and this gives them the encouragement to revise and improve work, rather than just receive a grade and move on to the next class.

update: Although I say no rubric required, you can have a rubric attached to the video once complete. I do that as well so they have a paper version of the grade.
