As a way to make students more aware of online safety, privacy, and information sharing, have students Google themselves (or you if you are willing!). Have them write a brief (1-2 paragraphs) creative piece commemorating/honoring the individual they searched based specifically and only on the information they found - they cannot rely on information they may already know.

As a way to scaffold this for learners, you could have them identify the data they collected (how many hits, top sites, images, etc.) Then students could write a sentence describing themselves based on each data point they logged. From this they could refine to make their "eulogy".

When I first arrived at my current school my kids told me they saw a picture of me in a bathing suit online. I assured them they did not and asked how. They told me to Google myself. I did and it was a family portrait and I had on a dressy tank top. But the next picture down was my then 12 year old cousin, her school, her travel softball team, and the schedule of her tournaments. It was shocking and I immediately had a conversation about our public life with her and my family. I think this activity is vitally important!
