STEAMzine

Take all these wonderful STEM/writing activities we have here and give them a forum.

Let's create a zine that focuses on creative, STEM forward writing. I've noticed several good starter assignments posted here: virus biographies, comics, and life by the numbers. Wouldn't it be great if students all over the world could share these STEAMy creative endeavors and provide each other feedback and support?

Love this idea, Sandee...!  And love being invited into it, howsoever I might.

Thinking aloud: Might there be room for older STEM/STEAM students (thinking high school, even undergraduates) to collect, mentor, and otherwise work alongside and develop some of the ideas put forward by younger STEM/STEAM-minded student contributors?  Might there be room for creative writing in video and music form? A dedicated YouTube channel?

Kevin,

I think it should absolutely welcome all ages and stages and embrace multi-media expression. Here's the GoogleDoc link should you want to add ideas. It's not much right now but I should have time later today.

Best,
Sandee

Hey there, Sandee --

Can't find that google doc link.  It's likely user error on my side....
When you get a free(r) minute, maybe share it via kday@asds.org.   Peace to you, KMD.

I like the idea of a dedicated YouTube channel or maybe a interactive blog with a moderator where students can submit posts. I like the Medium platform which allows for public annotation as well

Cool idea! Would this be solely student driven? Could teachers contribute? Be part of the process? I wonder if Medium might serve as a source of inspiration for what STEAMzine might look like.  Where are you thinking of going with this next? Do you want to start thinking about audience, medium, guidelines...we could get a google doc started to build out the idea in more detail. Happy to help!

I'd love to flush this out more and would welcome help. There I am finishing my last semester of grad school and teaching full time so things are rather chaotic at the moment. I see it as a place for a variety of voices: teachers, students, parents, and outside mentors. I'd love students to take the lead and act as a sort of editorial board and I agree that Medium is a great format to follow, though I'd like to embrace other mediums beside text, like podcasts. I wonder if the would want to collaborate or sponsor? I'm down for getting a doc started! My email is sbisson@sfbrandeis.org.
